The issue of internet dating is already one of deception and trumped-up stories. Every time people swipe left or right on Tinder or Bumble or whatever, they are at risk of disappointment in the person they expected to meet or in the shattered dreams of having found the love of their lives.
Hence, the overture of suspicions has resulted in double and triple checking of anyone with an account. A dilemma that swooped the popular singer, Zayn Malik.
As he recently shared in a cover story with Nylon, Zayn talked about his misfortunes with the popular dating app, Tinder. The “Dusk Till Dawn” singer and former member of the boy band One Direction revealed that he attempted to date using the app but “Everyone accused me of catfishing. They’re like, ‘What are you using Zayn Malik’s pictures for?’” He shared, “I’ve been kicked off once or twice.”
Although the setback didn’t matter too much in the end, this snafu proved a long-lasting issue with online dating.
To further gain insight into this estranged behavior, we asked Rwandans for their point of view Mwiza Sarah, an entrepreneur, finds internet dating in Rwanda unexpectedly effective. To her, “It’s opened up a whole new world of possibilities for meeting people I wouldn’t have otherwise crossed paths with.”
Mbonyimana Mike, a university student, matches Sarah’s opinion. “Online dating has become quite popular among young adults in Rwanda. It’s seen as a convenient way to connect with potential partners, especially in a fast-paced world.”
Despite these successes, there are still skeptics. Mugisha Jean, a healthcare worker, expresses concern about the authenticity of online profiles, saying, “I’ve heard stories of people misled by fake profiles. It makes me cautious about trusting someone I meet online.”
Online dating has gained immense popularity in Rwanda in recent years, with many findings of success in forming meaningful connections. Similarly to Zayn’s experience, Rwandans using dating apps encounter their share of challenges. Their daunting experiences highlight trust issues in people. However, the need to meet new people and expand one’s social circle is a never-ending journey.
Presently, Zayn is navigating the single life and prioritizing being a parent. In the end, Zayn Malik’s online dating hurdles present the case for perils in pursuit of love. While it’s a convenient method to meet individuals, care is advised against the prevalence of dishonesty or its limitations.
