A street in Oakland, California, has been given a new name to honor Tupac Shakur, a famous hip-hop artist who died 27 years ago. The street used to be called MacArthur Boulevard, but now it’s called “Tupac Shakur Way.” Tupac lived near this street in the 1990s. They had a ceremony to announce the new name, and it was very emotional, with Tupac’s family and the rapper MC Hammer from Oakland attending.

During a special event, Tupac’s sister Sekyiwa “Set” Shakur gave a heartfelt message, asking the community to always remember and honor Tupac’s legacy in their hearts and in their neighborhood. After her speech, they revealed a sign named “Tupac Shakur Way” on it. MC Hammer, who spent a lot of time with Tupac in his last months before he was tragically shot and died at the age of 25 in 1996, declared Tupac as the greatest rapper without any doubt.
Tupac Shakur, a famous rapper, had friends like Money-B and Too Short who also talked about him during the ceremony. They highlighted how he still has a big impact on the world of hip-hop.

Tupac originally came from New York and Baltimore but later made the San Francisco Bay Area, especially Oakland, his home. Oakland was like his second home, and he thought it played a big role in shaping his music and who he was. City Councilwoman Carroll Fife, who led the effort to rename a street in Tupac’s honor, said that Tupac was proud to have Oakland as a big part of his life and career.
This ceremony happened just one day after a former leader of a street gang in Southern California, named Duane Keith “Keffe D” Davis, said in court that he didn’t commit the crime of murder related to the shooting in Las Vegas that killed Tupac Shakur. Keffe D is the only person still alive who was connected to the car from which the deadly shots were fired. This was the first and only time anyone has been charged with a crime in connection with this case, even though it has been under investigation for 27 years.
Tupac’s family talked about how sad it was that he died violently when he was just 25 years old. They mentioned that it involved a Black man hurting him, and it seemed like another Black man planned it. They didn’t talk about the current legal issues related to his death.
