The 2024 Global Mobility Report by Henley, a leading residence and citizenship advisory firm, indicates that Rwanda now has visa-free access to 65 destinations, representing 29% of the globe.

While this milestone opens doors to incredible opportunities for travel enthusiasts, it can also be a gateway to transformative education, equipping Rwandans with skills that benefit not just themselves but the entire nation and continent.

We know that pursuing international education comes with high costs, and with the current economy not “economying,” this may make you hold back. But worry not! We’ve got you covered with a detailed list of scholarship opportunities in these countries to eliminate this barrier.

If you’re ready to further your degree while gaining exposure to diverse cultures and global networks, take notes.

    The African Union (AU) Scholarships

We’ll start close to home—within the region (buy Africa, build Africa). Rwandans can travel visa-free within the East African Region (Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, and Sudan). Among these, Kenya has a strong track record of offering world-class education.

Through the African Union Scholarships, you can apply for funding at institutions like the Pan African Institute for Basic Sciences, Technology, and Innovation (PAUSTI) and Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT). These scholarships cover master’s and PhD programs in:

    – Civil Engineering

    – Electrical Engineering

    – Mechanical Engineering

    – Mathematics

    – Molecular Biology & Biotechnology

In West Africa, opportunities in Nigeria include the Pan African University Institute for Life and Earth Sciences (PAULESI) and the University of Ibadan (UI). Master’s programs span fields such as:

    – Environmental Management

    – Avian Medicine

    – Health Sciences

    – Sports Management and Policy Development

PhD programs include Environmental Management, Health Sciences, and Plant Breeding. Visit the African Union Scholarships website for details.

The African Development Bank (AfDB) Scholarships

Do you dream of contributing to Africa’s prosperity? The Japan Africa Dream Scholarship (JADS), offered in partnership with the African Development Bank, provides funding for master’s studies in:

    – Energy

    – Agriculture

    – Health

    – Environmental Sustainability

    – Engineering

Applicants must have relevant professional experience and a history of supporting their country’s development. For details, visit the AfDB Scholarships website.

    Commonwealth Shared Scholarship Scheme (UK)

Since joining the Commonwealth in 2009, Rwanda has gained access to numerous educational opportunities. The Commonwealth Shared Scholarship Scheme supports master’s studies in areas such as:

    – Science and Technology for Development

    – Strengthening Global Peace and Governance

    – Resilience and Response to Crises

These scholarships cover tuition, examination fees, airfare, and living expenses. Applications are due by 12th December 2024 on the official website.

Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s Degree Scholarships (EU)

This scholarship allows 25 individuals annually to pursue master’s programs across European universities. Programs include the Education Policies for Global Development (GLOBED) hosted by:

    – Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona

    – University of Glasgow

    – University of Bremen

    – University of Cyprus

The scholarship covers tuition, travel, and living stipends. Applications open 12th January 2025 and close 19th February 2025.

    Fulbright Program (USA)

The Fulbright Program awards approximately 8,000 scholarships annually to students, scholars, and professionals. It offers funding for master’s, PhD, and research opportunities in various disciplines. Check the Fulbright website for country-specific application details.

    Orange Knowledge Program (Netherlands)

Funded by the Dutch government, this program supports master’s degrees and short courses in fields like:

    – Agriculture

    – Environment

    – Health Care

    – Social Sciences

Applications can be made via the Study in NL website.

    Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships (Switzerland)

The Swiss government offers scholarships for postgraduate research and the arts. These are available at Swiss universities and conservatories. Candidates must secure nominations from an academic supervisor.

    The Rhodes Scholarship (UK)

This prestigious program supports postgraduate studies at the University of Oxford. Scholarships are awarded based on academic merit and leadership potential. Recipients receive full tuition, living expenses, and a stipend of €19,092 annually.

Swedish Institute Scholarships for Global Professionals (SISGP)

This program offers over 350 scholarships for master’s studies in Sweden. It focuses on fields such as:

    – Agriculture

    – Medicine

    – Social Sciences

The scholarship covers tuition, living expenses of SEK 12,000 per month, and a one-time travel grant. Applications open 10th February 2025.

Hong Kong Research Grants Council (RGC) Fellowships

The Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme offers funding for PhD programs at institutions like:

    – City University of Hong Kong

    – University of Hong Kong

Recipients receive an annual stipend of HK$337,200 and a travel allowance of HK$14,000 for three years. Applications close 1st December 2024.

    Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program

This initiative provides funding for African students to study at institutions like:

    – Makerere University

    – University of Rwanda

    – Carnegie Mellon University Africa

The program supports young leaders (under 35) committed to community transformation.

University of Manitoba Graduate Fellowships (Canada)

Graduate students at the University of Manitoba can receive scholarships worth $14,000 per year (master’s) or $18,000 per year (PhD). Eligibility requires a GPA of 3.0 or higher.

    Final Thoughts

While traveling for leisure broadens horizons, studying abroad transforms lives. These scholarships provide the tools to create sustainable change and open doors to impactful careers.

To succeed, start preparing early. Write compelling essays that highlight leadership skills and community impact, gather strong recommendations, and polish your English proficiency for tests like TOEFL or IELTS. Lastly, attend educational expos and connect with alumni for guidance.

    All the best!
