The Basketball Africa League (BAL) Semifinals on Wednesday, June 29th, 2024, continued showcasing thrilling matchups as teams vied for a coveted spot in the finals. The first game saw the Rivers Hoopers face off against Al Ahly Ly. The high-stakes encounter unfolded as Al Ahly Ly took an early lead, surging ahead by 16 points in the second quarter. However, the resilient Rivers Hoopers staged a remarkable comeback, seizing the lead in the final quarter.

The game remained a nail-biter, with Rivers Hoopers and Al Ahly Ly locked in a tense battle. Rivers Hoopers tied the game in the third quarter, igniting the crowd with a tough putback. As the clock wound down, Al Ahly Ly’s offensive foul afforded Rivers Hoopers two crucial free throws. Although they converted one, a missed opportunity left the game hanging by a thread, with Rivers Hoopers holding a narrow one-point lead at the end of the third quarter, 60-56.

Individual performances shone through, with Kelvin Amayo and Devine Eke leading the charge for Rivers Hoopers, amassing 22 and 19 points, respectively. Lual Lual and Robert Golden showcased their prowess on the opposing side, contributing 21 and 18 points each for Al Ahly Ly.

As the game entered the fourth quarter, Rivers Hoopers capitalized on two free throws to extend their lead to six points. Foul trouble plagued Al Ahly Ly, resulting in Kevin Murphy’s disqualification with six fouls. Nonetheless, Al Ahly Ly rallied, narrowing the deficit with quick scoring bursts and free throws, setting the stage for a dramatic finish.

Both teams traded baskets, unleashing a flurry of offensive maneuvers in the fourth quarter. The intensity of the game was palpable, with spectators witnessing a true test of skill and determination. With under two minutes to play, Rivers Hoopers held a precarious 72-71 lead, setting the stage for a heart-stopping finale.

In a stunning turn of events, Al Ahly Ly leveled the score at 73-73 with a mere 25 seconds remaining, propelling the game into overtime. Both teams displayed unwavering resolve, fiercely competing for a spot in the finals.

Overtime witnessed an electrifying display of athleticism, with both teams unleashing their full arsenal. A ferocious dunk propelled Al Ahly Ly to a five-point lead, but Rivers Hoopers swiftly responded, narrowing the gap to 78-82 with a series of swift plays. With 41 seconds left on the clock, Rivers Hoopers attempted two quick three-pointers, only to fall short in their pursuit of victory.

Ultimately, Al Ahly Ly emerged triumphant with a final score of 89-83, securing their place in the BAL Finals for the first time. The hard-fought victory marked a historic milestone for the Libyan side, as they clinched a spot in the finals in their maiden BAL appearance. Conversely, Nigeria’s Rivers Hoopers bowed out in the semifinals, paying the price for a subpar free-throw performance, finishing 9-for-20 from the line.

Al Ahly Ly’s remarkable journey to the finals was underscored by their unwavering determination, having secured their BAL ticket on the last day of the Road to BAL Qualifiers. The team’s resilience and skill were on full display, with standout performances from Will Perry, Kelvin, and Eke propelling them to the grand finale.

In the second semifinal, Petro de Luanda clashed with Cape Town Tigers in a fiercely contested battle. The matchup ignited the crowd as both teams jostled for a chance to face Al Ahly Ly in the finals. The game commenced with both sides showcasing their strengths, with the Tigers displaying sharpshooting prowess and Petro de Luanda exhibiting impressive ball movement.

Amidst a packed arena, the first quarter concluded with the Tigers holding a slender 16-15 lead, setting the stage for a closely fought encounter. The second quarter witnessed a flurry of lead changes, with Petro de Luanda showcasing their three-point prowess to gain a 43-37 advantage over the Cape Town Tigers at halftime.

Individual performances took center stage, with Nicholas Faust, Yanick Moreira, and Lukeny Gonçalves leading the charge for Petro de Luanda, while Cartier Ducati Diarra and Samkelo Cele spearheaded the Tigers’ efforts.

The halftime interlude featured a scintillating performance by the young Rwandan Afro-pop star, Kevin Kade, adding to the electric atmosphere as fans geared up for an intense second half.

As the third quarter unfolded, Petro de Luanda extended their lead to 52-44, capitalizing on their three-point shooting prowess. Despite the Tigers’ valiant efforts to narrow the gap, Petro de Luanda maintained their offensive onslaught, entering the final quarter with an 11-point lead, 70-59.

The fourth quarter witnessed a spirited fightback from the Tigers, as they sought to overturn the deficit. With Petro de Luanda leading 73-72 and only 1:46 remaining on the clock, the game reached a fever pitch, with both teams leaving it all on the court.

In a dramatic turn of events, Petro de Luanda’s clutch free throws put them ahead 77-74 with just 30 seconds left, igniting frenzied cheers from their supporters. However, the Tigers staged a remarkable comeback, capitalizing on a defensive mistake to sink two crucial free throws, tying the game at 77 and sending the crowd into a frenzy.

The game culminated in a thrilling overtime, with both teams showcasing resilience and skill. In a gripping conclusion, Petro de Luanda emerged victorious, securing a hard-fought 89-83 win over the Cape Town Tigers, setting the stage for an epic showdown in the BAL Finals.
