This Week’s Social Media Buzz – Kendrick vs Drake, Dress Shaming, and More!

May has brought a lot of excitement and drama to social media, from the heavy rainfall in Rwanda to the trending video of a French citizen touring the country on his electric trike to the ongoing debate about dress shaming. With the latest updates from the world of sports and music, there’s been a lot to keep up with.

In this weekly trend report, we’ll give you a rundown of the most talked-about stories on social media.

May Showers: Look out, Summer ain’t here Yet!

A warning from the Rwanda Meteorology Agency, on Monday April 29th, announced that the first four days of May would be critical, with heavy rainfall expected in some parts of the country. Regrettably, the alert arrived a little too late after last weekend’s heavy downpour took the lives of a mother and her child from Bumbogo Sector, Gasabo District, due to their house collapsing.

In response, authorities in Kigali urged people living in high-risk zones to relocate to safer areas. While social media has been having a little fun with a photo of a man in a suit wearing an envelope over his shoes to protect them from the rain, it’s important to remember that heavy rainfall can have devastating consequences, and we should all take extra care during these first days of May.

    Kino Yves

A video of a French citizen named Kino Yves riding his electric trike through the roads of Rwanda has been making waves on social media. In the video, Kino is seen chatting with a Rwandan man – on his bicycle- whose viral words “YOU ARE SEE ME”, captivated locals’ hearts. Yves has been exploring the country’s mountainous terrain, markets, and shops as he travels through Africa. Many people have been enjoying Kino’s videos and photos, which offer a unique perspective on life in Rwanda.

    Dress shaming again??

A photo of a woman in a red dress has been circulating on social media, and once again, the debate over dress shaming has resurfaced. While some people criticized the woman’s dress and questioned her morality, others defended her right to wear whatever she wanted.

We should bring back SHAME kuko this is slowly getting out of hand.

This is not the first time dress shaming has caused controversy on social media, and it’s unlikely to be the last. It’s worth noting that last year, a woman was arrested and prosecuted for wearing see-through clothing at a concert in Kigali. On April 26, the Supreme Court dismissed a petition by a feminist organization challenging the country’s public indecency laws. The issue raised was the lack of a clear definition for “indecent acts,” leaving room for subjective interpretation and arbitrary enforcement. It all goes to highlight the legal implications of this ongoing debate.

    UCL SemiFinals/NBA Playoffs

Sports fans have been on the edge of their seats this past week, with the UEFA Champions League semi-finals in full swing and the NBA playoffs heating up. PSG fans were disappointed after losing their first-leg match to Dortmund 1-0, and it’s all to play for in the Real Madrid vs. Bayern Munchen match, with the first leg ending in a 2-2 draw. It was heartbreak For Lakers fans who’d felt hopeful after their game 4 win to avoid a sweep against the Denver Nuggets, though they went on to lose game 5, marking the end of their season and leaving hefty question marks hanging over Lebron and the Lakers going into next season.

Meanwhile, fans of the Celtics, New York Knicks, Oklahoma City Thunder, and Minnesota Timberwolves were celebrating after their teams advanced to the second round of the NBA playoffs.

    Kendrick Hits BACK – TWICE!

Hip-hop fans have been buzzing about the ongoing beef between Kendrick Lamar and Drake. After Drake released two diss tracks, Kendrick finally responded with his first track, “Euphoria” on Tuesday and a follow-up this Friday titled “6:16 IN LA”.

Kendrick Lamar’s responses to Drake’s diss tracks, “Push Ups” and “Taylor Made Freestyle,” from April 2024, mark his first individual releases since “Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers” in May 2022.

The origin of these diss tracks dates back to 2013 when Kendrick took a shot at Drake on the Big Sean song “Control”. But the increased fuel in the friendly feud comes from Lamar’s lyrical attacks on Drake and J. Cole in his guest verse on Future and Metro Boomin’s March 2024 single, “Like That.”

The song has been a hit with fans and has topped the charts on YouTube, Spotify, and Apple Music. The beef between Kendrick and Drake has been the talk of social media for days now and shows no signs of slowing down. Are these men living in the studio? Stick around to find out!

UK’s process of sending immigrants to Rwanda received mixed reactions on Social Media

On May 1st, the Home Office of the UK released footage of immigration enforcement officers detaining several “illegal” migrants at different addresses, put in handcuffs, and forced into secure vehicles has caused mixed reactions on social media. The video shows the government of the UK plans to start detaining people ahead of their removal from the UK to Rwanda within the next few weeks.

    — Home Office (@ukhomeoffice) May 1, 2024

Some people have been praising the government for cracking down on illegal immigration, while others have been criticizing the methods used by immigration enforcement officers. X (formerly Twitter) users in Rwanda have been wondering if this was a wise decision by the government.
