The Nyege Nyege Festival, an electronic dance music extravaganza, an electrifying celebration of culture and freedom has become a lightning rod for controversy in Uganda. While it faces opposition due to cultural and moral concerns, it also serves as a pivotal player in the country’s tourism landscape. Here’s a closer look at this madness festival.
Nyege Nyege, translates to feeling of a sudden uncontrollable urge to dance irresistible in Luganda, has sparked debates due to its name, which in Kiswahili slang, nyege nyege showcase the blending traditional African beats with electronic music, reggae, hip hop and more, it’s a place where artists, both established and emerging and exchange creative energies.

This festival began in 2015 when Arlen Dilsizian , a music producer and a promoter from California, joined forces with Derek Debru , a Ugandan DJ. Together, they envisioned a festival that would blend electronic music with traditional African sounds and cultures, transcending boundaries in the process. With the support of a local arts collective called Nyege Nyege Tapes, the first edition of the festival was born.
From its humble beginnings, Nyege Nyege has grown exponentially, attracting music aficionados, artists, and curious wanderers from all over the world. Its unique appeal lies in the fusion of the global electronic music scene with the rich musical heritage of Africa.
However, Nyege Nyege is not just a dance party; it’s a test of Uganda’s readiness to handle post-pandemic tourism. It opens doors for local artisans to sell their wares and offers a platform for cross-cultural interactions, potentially showcasing Ugandan culture. The electronic dance music community it attracts is a growing niche that fosters a sense of belonging and diverse artistic tastes.

Unlike previous editions of Nyege Nyege, which were held in remote areas, this year’s festival will take place in the heart of Jinja. Nyege Wonderland will be located near the iconic source of the Nile and the Jinja Showground. It will feature eight stages for your entertainment and safety, offering the best of both worlds. The event will showcase a lineup of talented artists including Karol Kasita, DJ Vanss, Bushali, A Pass, Boutross, and many more of your favorite artists.
