During the thirtieth commemoration of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi, Irma Ihumure, through a thirty series podcast-Voices of Hope, interviewed thirty courageous women survivors. Their accounts, like many others from survivors of such atrocities, carried a weight too heavy to ingest\u2014rape, HIV\/AIDS contraction, firsthand witness of brutal killings, among other inhumane actions.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A survivor herself, Irma couldn\u2019t help but see beyond their words\u2014scars of a past that will never fade, homes that had fallen into disrepair and stories too heavy to bear alone. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI was shocked to learn that the majority of these women were sharing their testimonies for the first time, despite their age. Although the stories were too heavy to digest, their resilience cemented my own healing journey,\u201d explained Irma.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier, Irma had embarked on a personal journey towards healing. So, she felt the urge to not \u2018just remember\u2019 but restore the dignity of the \u2018mothers of the nation\u2019.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In her words, \u201cafter listening to their stories, I realised that I wanted to keep doing this, to know them better\u2014where they live, their lifestyles, and so on.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This \u2018cause\u2019 would later lead Irma to one of the survivor\u2019s homes, which she says was in a \u2018sorry\u2019 state. Prompting her to solicit funds from well wishers to renovate it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe before and after of the house was remarkable,\u201d she notes. Before sharing how it triggered \u2018something\u2019 within her. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen I saw the joy on this lady\u2019s face, I couldn\u2019t help but think of my own mother. Whether she would be in the same state had she survived the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi.\u201d This lady is in her late fifties, a widow, HIV positive, and with no kids, added Irma.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Early Life<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Irma recalls growing up under the watch of her adoptive parents\u2014a family so loving and filled with warmth that shielded her from the \u2018full force\u2019 of grief. Until whispers of the past found their way to her ears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI often heard people who visited us at home say I looked like my mother, and wondered who that mother they spoke of was. Because, I believed my aunt to be my mother,\u201d she recounted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Being the last born, Irma\u2019s siblings endeavored to protect her from the truth although their efforts were not long-lasting. By age seven, she knew the truth about her \u2018fate\u2019-an orphan, a label she refused to acknowledge throughout childhood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Road to Healing<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Irma\u2019s quest for \u2018knowledge\u2019 led her to China to further her education\u2014placing her in solitude, the first she had been since time immemorial. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

One would expect her to relish the moment\u2014independence, different country, new people, name it. Instead, memories surfaced, throwing her into depression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For instance, she recalled a time in boarding school when she faked being sick, reaching out to the headmistress for permission to return home. On being asked where home was, Irma experienced a meltdown. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cShe was just asking me about the geographical location of my house, because I was in Butare. However, I just burst into tears. Because to be honest, where was \u2018home\u2019 for me?\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another scenario was when she was nine years old and the authorities visited her school to register genocide survivors. Part of her class insisted that she was amongst them, while the other believed she wasn\u2019t\u2014having seen her \u2018supposed\u2019 mother pick her from school everyday. These ganged upon her for the truth about her status, a thing she admits was \u2018unsettling\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fast forward, Irma resorted to journaling her feelings\u2014starting with pages only she could read, and later, with the rest of the world.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI first shared my story as a genocide survivor in 2019. It was on 10th April, during the commemoration when I posted a photo of my late mom,\u201d she remarked. Adding that, it took her years of journaling, crying and grieving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Present day<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Famously known as \u2018lady Irma\u2019 on her social media platforms, Irma is an architect and project manager. She is also a life coach passionate about impacting communities and inspiring change. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Irma strongly believes that each one of us carry \u2018unspoken\u2019 trauma, whether its from the genocide, abuse, abandonment or silence. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

She stresses that whilst some scars can be invisible, they\u2019re still real and \u2018we\u2019 ought to face them, lest they shape \u2018our\u2019 life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe often think of trauma as \u2018unique\u2019, life shuttering events like the genocide,violence, or the loss of loved ones. We term them the \u2018big T\u2019s\u2019 because they leave visible scars. However, there are also other kinds of traumas that we rarely talk about,\u201d explained Irma. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

She added, \u201cthese are known as \u2018small T trauma\u2014emotional wounds that were not met. For example, moments when one is not comforted, or when their friends never show up when needed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Regardless of the nature of trauma, however, healing is necessary. By so doing, strength is nurtured and life flourishes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHealing is not about erasing your past or feeling threatened by it. It\u2019s about making peace with what you have lost, and finding the strength to live fully with what remains,\u201d Irma remarked. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

She made this statement while addressing Rwandans, friends of Rwanda, genocide survivors, and delegates who had gathered at Kigali Convention Center on 30th April, 2025 during the launch of \u201830 years, 30 stories\u2019–a memoir published by \u2018Imagine We\u2019 Rwanda. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the book, Irma is featured among the survivors of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi who \u2018chose to use their trauma to heal and grow\u2019, both as individuals and as a nation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At its core, the book aims to \u201cpreserve and amplify authentic first-hand experiences for prosperity, whilst educating the world about Rwanda\u2019s history and celebrating its extraordinary recovery.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
