The Basketball Africa League (BAL) Nile Conference continued its thrilling action at BK Arena in Kigali, Rwanda on 17th May 2025 as Rwanda’s APR (Armees Patriotique Rwandaise) faced off against Nairobi City Thunder from Kenya. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The game, a high-energy spectacle filled with electrifying performances from cheerleaders, MC Brian and King Promise, not to mention passionate fans was graced by H.E Paul Kagame, Clare Akamanzi, CEO NBA Africa, Hon. Nelly Mukazayire, Minister of Sports in Rwanda, European Union (EU) Ambassador in Rwanda, Ambassador Bel\u00e9n Calvo Uyarra, among others. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The match tipped off with Nairobi City Thunder making an early statement, as their captain Tylor Ongwae sank a three-pointer to give his team a 3-0 lead. APR Rwanda quickly responded, showcasing their defensive prowess and offensive efficiency. By the middle of the first quarter, they had taken control, leading 12-10. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite a strong effort from the Thunder, the first quarter ended with a narrow 23-22 lead for the Kenyan side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aliou Diarra dominated the second quarter, blocking shots and securing rebounds, while Jemar Randle and Antony Miller Jr. contributed crucial points, establishing a 39-31 lead at halftime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The third quarter saw Nairobi City Thunder attempting a comeback, fueled by aggressive play from Ongwae and William Davis II. The Kenyan side managed to keep pace with APR, scoring 20 points in the quarter. However, APR maintained their lead, heading into the final quarter with a 59-51 advantage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the fourth quarter, APR Rwanda unleashed their full offensive power outscoring the Thunder 33-12. Nairobi City Thunder struggled to keep up, ultimately falling to APR with a final score of 92-63, marking a strong start to their BAL campaign. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their (APR) next challenge will be against South African champions MBB on Sunday 18th May 2025 at 5:30pm local time after Nairobi City Thunder look to bounce back when they face Al Ahli Tripoli at 2:30pm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Top Performers<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

APR Rwanda\u2019s Aliou Diarra was the standout player of the night, delivering a dominant performance with 21 points, 12 rebounds, and six blocked shots. His defensive presence was crucial in shutting down the Thunder\u2019s offense. Jemar Randle also played a key role, contributing 20 points, while Antony Miller Jr. added 11 points to solidify APR\u2019s victory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Nairobi City Thunder, Tylor Ongwae led the charge with 14 points, followed by William Davis II, who managed 11 points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

About the Teams<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

APR Rwanda, officially known as Arm\u00e9e Patriotique Rwandaise Basketball Club, is one of the most decorated basketball teams in Rwanda. Founded in 1993, the club was initially established during the Rwandan Patriotic Front\u2019s liberation struggle, serving as a recreational outlet for soldiers during the ceasefire period. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the years, APR has dominated the Rwanda Basketball League (RBL), winning a record 15 national championships. The team has also made significant strides in international competitions, including winning the FIBA Africa Zone 5 Club Championship in 2008.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The team made its BAL debut in 2024, receiving direct qualification as the Rwandan champion. Despite a disappointing finish in the Sahara Conference, the team has continued to strengthen its roster, aiming for a deeper run in the 2025 season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the other hand, Nairobi City Thunder is a Kenyan professional basketball team that has steadily risen to prominence. Founded in 1998 as NSSF Stars, the team initially operated as a corporate club under Kenya\u2019s National Social Security Fund. Over the years, the team underwent several transformations, rebranding as International Christian Center in 2003, before adopting its current name in 2010.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2023, the team was acquired by Twende Sports Limited, transitioning into a fully professional organization. This move allowed the Thunder to attract top talent, including Tylor Ongwae, who previously played in Europe. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The team won its second national championship in 2024, securing a historic undefeated season. Their success in the Road to BAL saw them become the first Kenyan team to qualify for the Basketball Africa League.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
