In honor of Labour Day, we take a closer look at the vibrant and diverse workforce that powers Kigali, Rwanda. From the early morning hustle of street vendors to the meticulous precision of corporate professionals, each day is a testament to their dedication and resilience. This article delves into their daily lives, offering a glimpse into their routines, challenges, and triumphs. Join us as we explore the unique stories and experiences that make up the heartbeat of this dynamic city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m an early bird \u201d \u2014 Uwineza Chantal<\/strong>, Street Vendor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I ran into Chantal one hot afternoon, near the Nyabugogo bus park. At first, I didn\u2019t want to bother her in that heat, but when I walked over, she greeted me with a kind smile\u2014one that says she\u2019s used to pushing through long days every day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI wake up at 4 a.m.,\u201d she told me. \u201cBy 5, I\u2019m already in Nyabugogo, trying to find the best fruits\u2014mostly bananas and passion fruits. The majority of my buyers are students and people heading to work, so I need to catch them early.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once she\u2019s done selling in the morning, she heads back home to Kicukiro Centre\u2013there\u2019s always something to do: a few chores and a bit of rest. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the afternoon, at 3 p.m., she\u2019s back out again, setting up at Nyanza-Gal\u00e9. \u201cThat time works for me,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s not too busy, and it\u2019s safer. On a good day, I can make about 6,000 RWF. It\u2019s not a lot, but it helps me take care of my kids.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chantal doesn\u2019t complain. Even with the sun beating down and her legs tired from standing all day, she keeps smiling. It\u2019s not easy\u2014but she\u2019s doing what she can.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI ride people around the city\u201d \u2014 Nsengiyumva Emmanuel<\/strong>, Moto Taxi Driver<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 Emmanuel is one of the many moto taxi drivers who help \u2018Kigalians\u2019 stay on the move.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMy schedule?\u201d he laughs. \u201cHonestly, it\u2019s not static. Some days I start at 6:00am and work until 2 or 3 a.m. While on others I begin at 3 p.m. all through the night.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Emmanuel admits that mornings aren\u2019t really his thing. \u201cPeople rush out to work around 6 a.m., but by 11, things slow down and it gets quiet. The real hustle starts around 5 p.m. when people are leaving work. That\u2019s when I make the most money.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He adores his job because it feeds him and keeps him \u2018going\u2019. \u201c I\u2019m proud that I learnt how to work. Nkavana amaboko mu mufuka\u2014I took my hands out of my pockets,\u201d Emmanuel stressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI work in a company\u201d \u2014 anonymous<\/strong>, corporate worker<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI work for a tech company,\u201d she said introducing herself. \u201cMy mornings start as early as 5:00 a.m. I\u2019m a lady, hence need extra time to get ready,\u201d she added. Rose (not real name) is then picked by her company car an hour later, setting off to \u2018face\u2019 the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Breakfast? Not her thing. \u201cI\u2019m not big on early breakfasts,\u201d she said. \u201cI just drink some water and get straight to work.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her first real pause comes around 9 a.m.\u2014a quick coffee break and maybe a light snack. Then she gets back to it, typing, planning, replying to emails until lunchtime at 1:30 p.m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The afternoons roll on with more work until 4:30 p.m. \u201cAfter that, I might chat with a few coworkers,\u201d she said. \u201cOr go out if we\u2019ve made plans\u2026 which doesn\u2019t happen that often.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYeah, it\u2019s not super exciting,\u201d she admitted. \u201cSometimes I miss the simple life, like how my mom used to just buy and sell. It was straightforward. But this job? It\u2019s helping me grow. It\u2019s a different kind of hustle.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You\u2019ve probably come across one of Phionah\u2019s videos while scrolling online\u2014bright, fun, full of personality. But behind the screen, there\u2019s a lot more going on than most people realize.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPeople think content creation is all fun and easy, but it\u2019s way more than that. I plan my scripts, shoot, edit, post, and even reply to comments. It\u2019s a whole job,\u201d remarked Phionah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unlike the classic 9-to-5 routine, her day depends entirely on what she has lined up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI don\u2019t really do early mornings. I usually start around 11 a.m.\u2014that\u2019s just what works best for me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, that doesn\u2019t mean her work is laid-back. She starts her day by prepping everything\u2014her script, her outfit, even her poses. \u201cI can\u2019t just show up and \u2018freestyle\u2019,\u201d she explains. \u201cI need to know what I\u2019m doing. Every detail matters.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some days begin with a meeting. Other days, she jumps straight into filming. \u201cIf it\u2019s a talking video, I have to memorize my script. If it\u2019s a photo shoot, then it\u2019s all about the angle and making sure I dress to match the brand.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even when the camera sets off, Phionah\u2019s work doesn\u2019t end. At home, she sets up her laptop, and gets to editing, especially if the deadline is approaching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYep, I do the editing too,\u201d she said. \u201cEspecially when the client wants it fast. It can get hectic.\u201d Nevertheless, it\u2019s all worth it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOne time, someone messaged me saying my video inspired her to start her own channel,\u201d \u201cThat made everything\u2014the late nights, stress fade.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cArt is how I speak\u201d \u2014 Nikita Heaven<\/strong>, Filmmaker & Musician.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Nikita, art is a way of communicating with the world around her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cRight now, I\u2019m working in both film and music,\u201d she shared. \u201cBut filmmaking takes up most of my time these days because I\u2019m focused on growing in that industry. It\u2019s not just a job for me\u2014it\u2019s an investment in my future.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She sees film and music as two sides of the same coin, both storytelling mediums that allow her to express herself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThey both tell stories in different ways. But filmmaking requires so much time and planning, so I have to talk to clients in advance to figure out how much time I\u2019ll need for each project. That way, I can make sure to balance my time and still find moments for my music.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s a tough balancing act, but Nikita makes it work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAt this stage in my life, I\u2019m still figuring out how to be flexible with both my art forms, without always depending on others or having to answer to a boss,\u201d she admits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So how does she manage it all?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI barely sleep, to be honest,\u201d she admits amidst laughter. \u201cBut coffee is my best friend! I always have a cup nearby to keep me going. I also have a morning routine that helps me stay grounded. I write everything down\u2014journaling, planning, just processing everything I need to do to stay organized.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite hardships, Nikita finds joy in blending both worlds of film and music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAt the end of the day, I reflect on how my film and music journeys are coming together. I\u2019m even working on my own visuals right now. It\u2019s still a work in progress, but I can see it coming together! It\u2019s been a learning curve, but I\u2019m all in.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
