Whether you\u2019re heading to Lake Muhazi, Bugesera or Kivu, packing the right items in your beach bag will enhance your beach experience, keep you comfortable, protected, and entertained. Read on to know the must haves for your beach staycation and where to find them in Rwanda, particularly Kigali.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beach Bag<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let\u2019s start with the bag itself (In case you don’t have one yet). A sturdy yet stylish beach bag is essential for a summer vacation. You need to carry quite several items, with some a little heavy. Thus, a bag with multiple compartments is ideal for organized belongings. Since you will spend most of the time by the waterside, finding one that is waterproof, or sand resistant is a plus. Specialty shops, fashion stores, and local markets like Kimironko will sort you out on this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beach Mat or Blanket<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s that time of the year when everyone is outside. Beach chairs will definitely not be enough to accommodate us all. This is where a portable beach mat or blanket steps in to save the day, providing a sand-free area to sit and relax. They are also available in Kimironko market or craft shops in town, near the Bank of Kigali. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Swimsuit and<\/strong> Cover-Up <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the sexy ladies ready to show off their perfection, what better way to grace us than in a bikini? And for the likes of myself who eat like the world is ending, only to regret it when we want to rock a two-piece swimsuit, well, a cover-up in the form of a sarong, kaftan, or lightweight dress should come in handy for a comfortable transition from the water to our mats. Boutiques at Chic Building and Elle Shop have us covered on these. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beach Towel<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Packing an absorbent beach towel is essential to dry off after a swim. For my guys, you can replace a beach mat with a sizable towel for a two-in-one use – drying off and lounging on the sand. PS: It shouldn\u2019t be any towel, but a quick-dry microfiber towel, which is lightweight and dries faster than a regular towel. Don\u2019t know where to find one? Look through the shelves of T2000 or Simba Supermarket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beach Umbrella or Shade Tent <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you want to go extra on sun protection, stow a beach umbrella or portable shade tent. These will provide a chilly spot for relaxation as well as protect your skin from prolonged exposure to the sun. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hydration and Snacks<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Planning to partake in beach volleyball and other physical sports? Expect to sweat heavily. And so, carry a water bottle with you for some extra hydration. If you\u2019re not a fan of drinking water, packing some snacks or fruits can do wonders. Remember, Rwanda is pro-environment conservation and climate change, thus opting for a reusable water bottle, available at all supermarkets and shops in town. . <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sunscreen<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although Rwandans and Africans were blessed with melanin in large portions, it doesn\u2019t mean we should neglect to protect our skins from the not-so-skin friendly UV(Ultraviolet) rays. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sunscreen should be the most crucial item in your beach bag. Before you collapse on that beach chair, endeavour to apply a broad spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF (Sun Protective Factor) 30. Reapply every two hours, especially after swimming or sweating. You can purchase high-quality sunscreens like Cella Vie at supermarkets like Simba or pharmacies such as Goodlife Pharmacy in Kigali. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Additionally, protect your lips from sunburn with a Lip Luxe Lip Balm from Her Majesty Cosmetics at KABC-Kimihurura, DICO Center-Nyarutarama, or UTCKigali city center.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Entertainment<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Like your skin, eyes, too should be shielded from the sun. So, when you\u2019re packing, don\u2019t forget a good pair of sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat in your beach bag. And for people who hate glares, opt for polarized sunglasses. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Extra Clothes<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you still have space in your bag, pack a change of clothes for after swimming and a plastic bag for wet items. Hygiene and cleanliness are still key, even at the beach. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition, pack a comb, bathing soap, and body lotion – that is if you\u2019re on a day trip and have to head back home the same day. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Flip-flops or Sandals<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Comfortable and waterproof footwear is crucial for walking in the hot sand and navigating rocky areas. Choose flip-flops or sandals that are easy to clean and quick to dry, walk into any Uzuri shop around town, and give your feet a well-deserving summer treat. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
