It is indeed a dream come true, a huge inspiration for female DJs and Rwanda’s music industry in general, to be recognized on a continental level, DJ Sonia, one of the leading female disc spinners in Rwanda has said.
The famous DJ said this after bagging a nomination at the 5th edition of Youth Excellence Awards Africa (YEA), which recognizes young people who are making a significant impact across all sectors of work in Ghana and Africa.
Competing with top disc jockeys on the continent including the likes of Sta from Ghana and Sena among others in the ‘DJ of the Year’ category, DJ Sonia becomes the first local female deejay nominated at YAE and the only Rwandan musician to participate in this of event.
The achievement comes after DJ Sonia’s hot rise in the Rwandan music industry as one of the few female disc jockeys in the country to headline major events and the first to be recognized at the continental level.
Speaking to Sens Magazine, the 25-year-old DJ highlighted how huge and inspiring it is to be nominated by YEA, saying it will take his music career to places and attract more women in the local DJing career, which is considered a male-dominated industry.
“I never thought I could be recognized on such a big level, but it is a sign that we’re slowly getting there. I can’t wait to land in Ghana and represent my country!” Sonia remarked.
She further emphasized how the country’s role in supporting talent is laying a solid foundation for young people and businesses in the country to meaningfully participate in major platforms like YEA.
Since its inception in 2017, the Youth Excellence Award Africa has been recognizing young people who are making a significant impact across all sectors of work in Ghana and Africa.
It’s a platform that brings together all hardworking young people to network and build business relationships, showing them that excellence and success can be achieved at a tender age.
The young disc jockey went from a live radio show on Magic FM to playing in some of Kigali’s best night spots and has never looked back. Despite being affected by the pandemic, she is now one of the most popular female disc jockeys in the city who plays on the biggest stages around the country.
